II. MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA
Let’s now head towards Central Asia beginning with Afghanistan. Our sole character is Kira from Mortal Kombat. While I’m not entirely sure if Kira is a native of Afghanistan since the official story states that just resides in that country, she probably made a name for herself as being the only known female member of Kabal’s new Black Dragon Organization.
Mortal Kombat: Kira
We go westward to Iran. Also known as Persia, it is home to the famous hulking, axe-wielding golem of the Soul Calibur series, Astaroth. After Astaroth’s demise in Soul Calibur IV, a new golem, Astaroth II, takes his place in the series.
Soul Calibur: Astaroth, Astaroth II
We now move on with the next country on our list, Iraq. The sole representative from Iraq is Zasalamel. Despite Zasalamel’s obvious Black African appearance, I firmly believe that he might be originally of Sumerian descent, basing from the names of his moves which are referenced to Sumerian culture. Modern-day southern Iraq corresponds to the southern part of Mesopotamia, which included the ancient civilization of the Sumerians. With Zasalamel’s back story, we found out that he obtained the power of endless reincarnation. My opinion is that his original body and race was of Sumerian ancestry. As he continued with his reincarnation process, he now obtains the body of a Black African man who was present in the Soul Calibur III and IV.
Soul Calibur: Zasalamel
Our next destination country is Turkey. There have been 3 fighting-genre video game characters hailing from Turkey and all of them have unique and interesting themes. We have Ellis, an ethnic Japanese girl who was adopted into a family of Turkish minstrels; Angelica, a staff wielder who’s oblivious of her Turkish ancestry; and Hakan, a Turkish businessman and an expert of Turkish Oil Wrestling.
Samurai Shodown: Angelica
Street Fighter: Hakan
Battle Arena Toshinden: Ellis
We move further to the Middle Eastern region with Lebanon. Our sole Lebanese video game character is Sahad Asran Ryuto of Power Instinct. Depicted as the cool and handsome guy of the series, Sahad fights with the aid of his magical lamp, capable of summoning a genie.
Power Instinct: Sahad Asran Ryuto
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Our next stop is the United Arab Emirates. Rashid, the sole Arab fighter from the Street Fighter series is most likely Emirati as depicted by his official artwork and stage which features the Dubai skyline.
Street Fighter: Rashid
Let’s now visit Saudi Arabia. This Arab nation provides us the 3 Keffiyeh-wearing fighters: scimitar-wielding Sheikhs, Avu, and Sheikh Maherl, and Shaheen, a military fighter specializing in hand-to-hand combat. They are joined by Pullum Purna, a wealthy heiress who utilizes acrobatic attacks.
Martial Champion: Avu
Breakers: Shiekh Maherl
Street Fighter: Pullum Purna
Let’s move on to North Africa starting with Egypt. Famous for its amazing and wondrous ancient civilization, almost all Egyptian video game characters are themed with royalty. Martial Champion’s Titi was inspired from the real-life ancient Egyptian queen consort, Nefertiti, while Alsion III and Anakaris, are depicted as undead pharaohs who have become mummies with magical powers. Zafina and Azazel are most likely from Egypt due to their designs and setting of their story in the Tekken plot.
Tekken: Azazel, Zafina
Breakers: Alsion III
Martial Champion: Titi
We now head towards Nigeria, a country located in West Africa. Nigeria’s sole representative is Bobby Strong, a professional boxer hired to participate in the Bonnou no Kaihou tournament. Bobby Strong is a direct reference to Bobby Ologun, a Nigerian-born TV personality and MMA fighter in Japan.
Power Instinct: Bobby Strong
Moving to East Africa, we arrive at Kenya. Kenya has provided us with 4 distinct video game characters: Baraki, the jungle-dwelling fighter who utilizes rolling attacks; Mahamba, a spear-wielding tribesman; Zazie Muhaba, a Karate expert and wildlife environmentalist and Elena, the warrior princess who fights using Capoeira.
Power Moves: Baraki
Martial Champion: Mahamba
Fighter’s History: Zazie Muhaba
Street Fighter: Elena
Our last stop in the African continent is Botswana. This country’s sole representative to fighting games is Cyrax, a skilled Motswana warrior and a member of the Lin Kuei clan. However, he became the second Lin Kuei warrior to undergo cybernetic transformation thus turning him into a soulless cyborg.
Mortal Kombat: Cyrax
