IV. SOUTH AMERICA

VENEZUELA

Let’s now visit the continent of South America. Our first country in the list is Venezuela. We are introduced to 3 SNK-developed Venezuelan characters: Tam Tam, a tribal warrior from Green Hell who is tasked to retrieved his village’s missing artifact, the Palenke Stone; Cham Cham, Tam Tam’s younger sister who wields a boomerang; and Foxy, a very svelte fencer who works a secret agent.

Tam Tam and Cham Cham are both of Indigenous Amerindian ancestry while Foxy seems to have mestizo (mixed European-Amerindian) features.

Samurai Shodown: Cham Cham, Tam Tam

King of Fighters: Foxy

COLOMBIA

We move further to Colombia, which is represented by a sassy Capoeirista and nature lover, Zarina. The ironic thing is, Zarina was stated to be living in Brazil… nevertheless, she’s Colombian. Given her appearance, fighting style and story background, I would say she’s mixed Afro-Indigenous Colombian.

King of Fighters: Zarina

PERU

Our next stop is the land of the Incas, Peru. Peru is home to 2 fighting-genre video game characters: Rosa, an amnesiac katana-wielding rebellion leader; and Atahua, an indigenous Peruvian boy who seeks the restoration of his fallen tribe’s empire.

Battle of the Beast God: Rosa

Battle Arena Toshinden: Atahua

BRAZIL

Our last stop in the continent brings us to Brazil. The largest country in South America is home to several memorable video game characters in the fighting genre. Although most character storylines are connected to the Amazon rainforest or themed as indigenous tribal warriors, a fighting style that definitely stood out was Capoeira.

Reflecting Brazil’s multicultural community, the characters themselves are also diverse: Indigenous Brazilian, White Brazilian (Blanka is actually White, his green skin pigment is a result of his constant absorption of chlorophyll), Afro Brazilian, Japanese Brazilian (Oro is originally from Japan) and multiracial Brazilians (Bandeiras Hattori, Laura and Sean Matsuda are Afro-Japanese Brazilian; I really find Pupa Salgueiro’s features to be a mix of Black and European; I find Nelson’s and Katarina Alves’ appearance and facial features to be very ambiguous so I think they’re considered “Pardo” – mix of White/Black/Indigenous of varying degrees).

Fatal Fury: Bob Wilson, Khushnood Butt, Richard Meyer

King of Fighters: Bandeiras Hattori, Nelson

Breakers: Rila Estansia

Fight Fever: Golrio

Rage of the Dragons: Pupa Salgueiro

Battle Arena Toshinden: Fen Barefoot, Tau

Street Fighter: Blanka, Laura Matsuda, Oro, Sean Matsuda
